In brief - New rental law changes came into effect on Monday the 29th of March this year, expand the rights and responsibilities of renters and rental providers (landlords) with the objective of making renting in Victoria fairer and safer

The changes cover the end-to-end lifespan of a rental agreement entered in to after the 29th of March 2021 and Nathan Rhimes, Special Counsel in our Melbourne office has provided a summary of these changes across the five articles below.

The first examines what the changes mean to the preparation of a rental agreement and the second article outlines the minimum safety and other standards a rental property must meet. Bonds, rental payments and increases of rent are discussed in the third article which also outlines the new procedure for the treatment of late rental payments and subsequent notices to vacate.

Article four lists the termination of lease process and the compensation for a broken lease and in the final article Nathan has noted the changes with regards to rights to entry.
