Colin Biggers & Paisley is pleased to announce their latest round of promotions. Seven lawyers have been appointed to senior positions, six of those within the insurance team. 

Effective 1 January 2022, Patrick Cavanagh and Laura Tulloch have been promoted to special counsel, and Jack Golding, Amaya Hettige, Justin Liang, Gabrielle Morris and Briarna Stiff have been promoted to senior associate. 

Patrick joined the practice in 2016 as a member of the insurance team. His experience covers professional indemnity and general liability claims. He advises insurers, financial and professional services businesses on policy coverage issues, litigated and unlitigated disputes, and pursuing subrogated recovery actions. He's also acted for professionals in disciplinary proceedings (with a special focus on allied health).

Laura is in the insurance team and has a focus on professional indemnity, public liability and general liability claims. She has acted in a variety of claims primarily involving personal injury, property damage and industrial diseases (asbestos) claims. Laura has a particular interest in medical malpractice claims. She assists a range of allied health professionals to respond to coronial Inquests, and complaints and investigations, and to defend litigated negligence claims.

Jack joined the practice in 2019. Jack's insurance practice focuses on professional indemnity claims and he regularly acts for a range of professionals, with a particular focus on the building and construction sector. He has particular experience as both coverage and defence counsel in high value, complex and multi-party general and cladding defect claims.

Amaya joined the practice in 2020 and works in the insurance team. Her focus is on employment practices liability claims and acting for employers across a range of industries, including retail, fast food, education, manufacturing, and technology. Amaya advises on unfair dismissal, general protections, anti-bullying and discrimination claims, interpretation of instruments and management of complex industrial disputes.

Justin joined the practice in 2019 and is a member of the corporate and commercial team. His practice focuses on private M&A and commercial contracts. Justin has a particular interest in IT procurement arrangements and regularly advises on corporate structuring and corporate governance matters.

Gabrielle joined the practice in 2018 and is a member of the insurance team. She acts for insurers in professional indemnity, general liability and casualty claims. Gabrielle has defended professional indemnity claims against a range of professionals and organisations, including nursing home operators, disability care providers, hospitals and real estate agents, as well as medical malpractice claims against psychologists, chiropractors, optometrists and numerous other allied health professionals. She also acts for commercial property owners, property managers, occupiers, contractors and host employers in relation to general liability matters.

Briarna joined the practice in 2016. Her insurance practice is focused on general liability, professional indemnity, compulsory third party and commercial litigation. Her role as a claims officer for a large Australian insurer prior to joining Colin Biggers & Paisley and since joining, with two long secondment stints, provide her with a unique understanding of the insurance industry. 

This announcement follows the recent appointments of special counsel Sam Pearlman to the disputes and investigations team, and special counsels Lana Remedi and Jonathan Sumskas, and senior associates Ben Baumgarten and David Uka to the insurance team.
