A senior associate in the insurance team since 2022, Azat's areas of expertise include cyber, privacy and digital governance, financial institutions, class actions, directors and officers insurance, and professional indemnity insurance.

He also has extensive experience in corporate disputes, class actions, and insurance litigation: focusing on class actions, cyber, professional indemnity and D&O litigation, complex coverage claims, employment practices and life insurance.
 
Azat's experience in corporate disputes includes:

  • class action litigation including acting as defence counsel for insurers in a shareholder class action, as well as acting for the lead plaintiff and group members; and 

  • acting for insurers following the liquidation of former ASX entities, including mining companies, and criminal prosecutions of former directors.

His expertise in cyber includes incident response and claims, including advising ASX20 clients on their obligations under the Privacy Act, SOCI, and drafting notifications to insurers. Azat has worked on some of the major cyber incidents in Australia - on every stage of the cyber incident/claim from advising and managing the cyber incident at the outset, to commencing recovery proceedings against third parties.  
 
Azat also advises insurers on coverage matters including class actions against major financial institutions, as well as in respect of regulatory investigations and proceedings (including ASIC and APRA).

In addition to his Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice, Azat holds a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Finance from Flinders University. He was admitted to the Supreme Court of South Australia in 2016 and is also admitted to practice in the High Court of Australia.
