Graeme Matheson

Special Counsel

Graeme is a special counsel in Colin Biggers & Paisley’s Insurance team, with a focus on construction litigation and professional indemnity matters. He represents professionals and their insurers in complex litigated and pre‑action disputes across Australia.

Overview

Graeme has extensive experience acting in construction litigation, with a particular focus on representing professionals and their insurers in both litigated and pre‑action proceedings. His practice spans a broad range of matters, from large and complex infrastructure projects to smaller, discrete disputes, requiring a pragmatic and commercially focused approach.

He regularly acts in the capacity of defence counsel and coverage counsel, advising on policy response issues and managing high‑risk claims. Graeme also acts for insurers in relation to first party and third party property damage claims and provides strategic advice on subrogated recovery matters. His experience includes managing technically complex disputes involving multiple parties, significant quantum and overlapping contractual and insurance issues.

Graeme also acts as both coverage and defence counsel in relation to regulatory claims against professionals.

Graeme brings an international perspective to his practice, having been admitted in Scotland before relocating to Australia. He has undertaken prescribed coursework to support his Australian practice and maintains a strong understanding of both domestic and international insurance and construction risk.

Graeme was admitted to practice in Scotland in October 2013 and in Australia in August 2021. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Strathclyde, a Bachelor of Laws and a Diploma in Professional Legal Practice from the University of Glasgow and has completed prescribed single unit courses through QUT and the College of Law.
