Lilian Belfield

Overview

Lilian advises insurer clients (state and private, national and international) across professional indemnity and public liability claims, acting in both coverage and defence roles. Her experience includes policy interpretation, indemnity advice and coverage strategy, as well as contribution allocation and recovery strategy. She supports claims teams with reserving input and strategic decision-making, informed by a strong understanding of liability, quantum assessment and dispute resolution pathways.

Lilian has extensive experience managing complex litigation, including multi‑party disputes involving the preparation of pleadings and evidence, interlocutory applications, including injunctions and dismissals and expert coordination. She is a regular advocate in alternative dispute resolution forums and in hearings across State and Federal jurisdictions.

Her construction and built environment practice includes advising building professionals on consultant liability and professional negligence, in particular arising out of ACP/EPS cladding and fire compliance, building certification and general building defects.

Lilian also has first-hand industry experience, having worked in a commercial role for one of Australia's largest utility contractors, advising on the full lifecycle of design, construction, operations and maintenance contracts and managing risk and insurance claims.

Lilian was admitted to practice in the Queensland Supreme Court and the High Court of Australia in 2018. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (Second Class Honours) from Queensland University of Technology and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the College of Law.
