Stuart Hetherington leads the trade and logistics team in both Sydney and Melbourne. Stuart has acted in a wide range of shipping and commercial litigation cases and has acted for P&I Clubs. He has also acted for many overseas and local insurance companies and syndicates, conducting cases in diverse areas including ﬁre, professional indemnity, directors and ofﬁcers liability, product liability, ﬁnancial institutions and business interruption.
Stuart was awarded the Lloyd’s List DCN Maritime Service Award in 2010.
In October 2012, Stuart was appointed the first non-European President of the prestigious Comité Maritime International (CMI). He has also served on the boards of the Sydney Port Authority and the Sydney Ports Corporation.
In 2013 and 2014-15, Stuart was listed in Best Lawyers in Australia for shipping and maritime, transportation and insurance. In its 2016 edition, he was once again recognised in these categories, as well as in alternative dispute resolution and litigation. Best Lawyers also named Stuart the Shipping and Maritime Lawyer of the Year in Australia in 2014-15.
In addition, Stuart was listed as a recommended lawyer in transport by Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2015. He has also been recognised as a leading lawyer in shipping in Chambers and Partners and Who's Who Legal Transport 2015.
Stuart is an accomplished author, having published Annotated Admiralty Legislation in 1988 and numerous articles. He has also presented papers at seminars for clients, the legal profession and the insurance and shipping industries.
Stuart was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1973 and admitted as a solicitor in NSW in 1978. He is admitted to practice in the Supreme Courts of NSW and Victoria, the Federal Court and the High Court of Australia. Stuart joined CBP Lawyers as a partner in 2005.
