Understand the differences in approach and protocols between the states and territories
For Aged Care providers operating facilities in more than one state or territory, it's important you understand how the differences in approach and public health directives impact your facility. Consider the following:
What is the status of the public health directives in the states and territories that you operate in?
Is it mandatory that employees and others entering your facility have the influenza vaccine? Are there exemptions?
Who is responsible for providing PPE for your aged care workers who are providing care?
Preparation and response
While many facilities had plans in place to respond to a crisis, there is a practical step between preparing for a crisis and responding to a crisis which is readiness.
Are your staff and management not only prepared but ready?
Has the impact on your supply chain been considered?
Have you conducted a practical positive COVID case simulation to test your protocols and contact tracing processes?
There are a number of steps you can take to keep your staff and residents safe. You should review and consider risk prevention and mitigation protocols including:
Health screening processes and questionnaires for staff and visitors
Internal and external communication protocols
Facilitating a debrief with staff on-site after a crisis, so the team can review their plan and response and adjust it for the next wave.
Finally, reinforce and model good behaviour; if you're unwell, it's ok to stay at home, it's the right thing to do.
