Stuart Unwin is a special counsel in the insurance team. He has over sixteen years' experience working in insurance law, personal injuries law, dispute resolution and civil litigation.
Stuart acts for international and domestic insurers in casualty, professional negligence, medical malpractice, professional discipline, property damage and defamation matters.
Stuart has a special interest in medico-legal issues, and in professional regulation and discipline in which he holds a board appointment.
Stuart has a depth of practical experience acting for insured employers across numerous industries, having acted for Queensland's largest workers' compensation insurer as a panel lawyer, and as a solicitor of choice to various employers in the private and public sectors. He has also acted for a national self-insured retailer on workers' compensation and public liability claims, for a compulsory third-party motor vehicle insurer, and for Medical Assessment Tribunals defending judicial review applications.
Stuart has experience managing claims involving multiple parties, physical injury, psychiatric injury, discrimination, bullying and harassment, inter-personal conflict, management and dismissal of employees, and complex medico-legal issues. His experience includes undertaking factual investigations, drafting court documents and resolving claims at conference and at mediation, as well as preparing for trial and instructing counsel at trial. He appears in the applications jurisdiction of state civil courts, with and without counsel. Stuart also provides education internally to staff and externally to insurer clients.
Stuart hold degrees in Arts and Law, and a Master of Laws degree majoring in commercial law. He is a member of the Queensland Law Society, the Australian Insurance Law Association, and the Australian Professional Indemnity Group.
Stuart was admitted to practice in 2000. He joined Colin Biggers & Paisley in 2016.
